Felted Top Down Ruffle Bag Pattern

After running out of wool on the last row I decided I would make my own pattern and work from the top down instead of the bottom up!   I don't mind being short a row or two in the body - and prefer that to running out of wool!!


The ruffled flap is knit first and then the body of the bag.  Makes a clutch or small cross-body bag.

Use 1 skein Cascade 220 yarn – 100 grams
Use 6.5mm straight and round needles
Finished size 6 x 9

Flap

Using straight needles, CO 160 st
Row 1  - Knit
Row 2 - Purl
Row 3 – K2 tog every stitch, 80 stitches on needle
Row 4 – Purl
Row 5 – K2 tog every stitch, 40 stitches on needle
Row 6 – Purl
Row 7 – knit 40 stitches in stockinette until piece measures 7 inches (approx 44 rows)

Body of Bag
Knit 40 stitches on to round needles
Cast on 40 stitches, 80 stitches on needles
Place markers at start and end of new stitches 
join in the round being careful not to twist stitches
Knit until bag measures 16”

Finishing
Sew bottom seam together. (Knit 40 stitches on to straight needle, knit remaining 40 stitches on to 2nd straight needle.  Turn inside out and use 3rd needle to knit one stitch from each needle and cast off.
Sew in ends.

Optional I-cord handle or wristlet handle. 
P/U and knit 5 stiches on either side of bag to make i-cord, knit desired length

Felt and enjoy. 

*Cascade felts well in a front load washer on Heavy Soil and hot wash, cold rinse.
